A Virtual Private Server (VPS) was developed to provide features usually reserved for a dedicated server at a more affordable price. An increasing number of web hosting users needed more flexibility, custom configurations, and Root Access, and the concept of a true virtual server fits their needs perfectly.

With a Virtual Private Server (VPS), each web hosting account receives their own operating system. The most common operating system is a version of Linux. The user’s operating system runs the typical web hosting software, including an FTP server, a web server such as Apache, and an email server. Users can configure these components without affecting other users on the same physical machine because they are working within their own virtual server. They are given “Root Access,” meaning they are allowed to use the root account on their server. The root account is required if you want to compile your own programs, change ownership of files and directories, or start services on ports below 1024.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) runs on one of our host servers. The host server runs a number of virtual private servers. Each VPS shares the host server’s memory, CPU, Internet connection and other resources. No one VPS can monopolize the resources. Each VPS gets a guaranteed share of the host server’s CPU, disk space, RAM and network.

We use Virtuozzo to power our VPSs. Once a VPS starts up, there is very little functional difference between it and a fully dedicated server. The boot process is the same. Services can be installed or configured as they normally are on a Linux server. Software can also be recompiled and installed in the usual manner.

A virtual private server may allow a user to configure their system in almost endless ways, but it does not always include essential web hosting tools and multiple-user management. However, our virtual private servers are coupled with powerful user management and virtual hosting tools such as Plesk and Webmin easily enabling businesses or other individuals to configure and support many user accounts on their VPS.

Benefits of Root Access Web Hosting?

With most shared web hosting plans, Root Access is simply not available. The reason is due to the level of access given to the root account. The root account has unlimited access to all files, folders, and system configuration settings. Root Access is required to start services on ports below 1024; you also need it if you want to compile and install programs or add modules to existing programs. In many ways, the root account on a Unix-like operating system is similar to the administrator account on Microsoft Windows.

Before the advent of the VPS technology, the only way to get root hosting was to purchase a web hosting plan on a dedicated server. What is Root Access Hosting?

Root Access hosting provides you with a variety of capabilities and possibilities. You are no longer encumbered with access restrictions or “Root Access required” error messages. Virtually all configuration files are available for you to edit at will, enabling you to customize your server in a variety of ways. There are literally thousands of “open source” software initiates active on the web at any given time. Some are relatively small hobby projects serving a specific need while a few, such as the Apache web server, the scripting language PHP, and the MySQL database, are stable, full-featured packages used extensively across the Internet.
